Grant Van Der Drift – 2009 Demon Energy MX Nationals (Round 2)
New Zealand DEMON Energy Motocross Championships
Round Two
Rotorua
Being a local and offering my services towards the maintenance of the track gave me an insight into what to expect on race day. The track appeared to be in top conditions for this round of riding.
Race Day
The weather turned ugly overnight with thunderstorms and consistent rain turning the track extremely muddy for race day. It rained on and off all day making riding the track more difficult.
Practice/Qualifying
Being up first was a bit of fun with trying to controlthe bike through the muddy conditions. Once qualifying came around there were planty of ruts and lines to choose from. Had a not so good run and qualified 14th.
Race One
Due to muddy conditions not being my personal favourite, i managed to stay upright and fought my way to 12th position.
Race Two
Didn’t start off too great with a collision on the first lap where I ended up off the track unable to start my bike. Eventually I got it going again and by the time I got around the first lapĀ I was 30 seconds behind my opponent in front of my. With determination I chased him and others down in front of him, putting my in 12th position by the end of the race. As I made my way back to the pits I realised I was exhausted and knew I had put in a good effort as i was unable to put my own bike on its stand.
Race Three
I got off to a good start, and with my efforts from the last race I knew I was capable of a much better placing. As the race went on, the weather got far worse with spectators running for cover. Trying to stay on two wheels as the track turned into a watering hole, i held my position finishing 8th
Overall
With the 3rd races higher points, adding to the other two races points ansured me a top ten finish, where I finished up 9th for the day
